MULTILAYER FARMING: SOLUTION FOR BETTER YIELD
What is multilayer farming?
The name multilayer farming itself tells that it involves growing of plants at different heights or layers on same piece of land at same time. It is a convenient method of farming to the farmers having small piece of land.
As different crops are grown in the field there is a chance of getting ample amount of income throughout the year by the farmers.
This type of farming is mostly adopted in Orchards and plantations. Higher benefits can be obtained by planting some plantation crops includes Coconut, Areca nut, Cashew nut,
Coffee etc. The chance of crop failure is very less in this method and maximum utilization of resources can be obtained by adopting this method.

How to do Multilayer farming?
• This method involves sowing of different seeds of crops at different layers which depends on the favourable conditions of their germination.
• Seeds of vegetables or fruits has to be sown in deep or topmost layer based on their size and suitable conditions to grow.
• Seeds of creepers like bottle gourd, bitter gourd has to be sown in small pits.
• Mixed cultivation can be seen in multilayer farming where different crops are mixed together and grown.
• Deep rooted crops should be mixed with shallow rooted crops, leguminous crops are mixed with non-leguminous crops etc..
• Plants which are planted at the top requires more sunlight while the bottom plants requires high humidity and can be grown in shade. So, planting should be done based on the requirement of the particular plant.
• Plants which are planted underground should be deep rooted ones and has to be grown in shade.
• The crops which are planted on the surface should be leafy and covers the land surface.
• Climbers should be stalked properly for easy growth and development.
• For straight growing plants like coconut, pruning should be done properly in order to occupy less space.
